Western Sydney Wanderers unveil Gombau as new head coach

Former Olyroos coach Josep Gombau has been unveiled as the new Western Sydney Wanderers head coach, becoming the successor to Tony Popovic.

Spaniard Gombau coached Adelaide United for three seasons between 2013 and 2015, winning the inaugural FFA Cup competition with the Reds, before he headed overseas to the US.

Western Sydney Wanderers Chairman Paul Lederer announced Gombau as the new head coach at a press conference this morning in Blacktown.

“We took our time and without question Gombau is the best man for the job,” Lederer said this morning.

“He fits us in terms of style of football, what he believes his types of training. Gombau is part of our vision.”

Gombau said he wants the Wanderers to begin playing an attacking style of football, and believes the team he has inherited fits that mould of football.

“I want to play attacking football and be attacking always. For me, the football I like is when you score a lot of goals,” says Gombau.

“I think we have the perfect players in the squad for this attacking style.”

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said Gombau will be getting the same support as outgoing coach Tony Popovic did, and says the appointment of Gombau is exciting for the club.

“Josep will be getting the same support that Popa got,” Tsatsimas says.

“It’s a very exciting time for the club, and this club wants to be the best.”

The outgoing Olyroos and former Barcelona youth coach will takeover from caretaker coach Hayden Foxe, who managed the Wanderers for the first month.

Gombau’s first game as Wanderers coach begins on Monday night with a massive Cup Eve clash against Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium, with Football Nation broadcasting the game from 7:30pm.
