Melbourne Victory confirm signing of Swedish star Ola Toivonen

Melbourne Victory have confirmed the signing of Sweden international Ola Toivonen on a two-year deal.

Toivonen is a striker with proven pedigree, having previously played for Ligue 1 outfits Rennes and Toulouse, Dutch giant PSV Eindhoven and English side Sunderland in the Premier League in 2015.

The 32-year-old has also won 64 caps for the Swedes, scoring 14 goals and playing a key role at the recent World Cup, scoring against Germany in their group stage encounter.

Following his arrival, Toivonen is confident the reigning A-League champions can win more silverware this campaign.

“I know Melbourne Victory is a big club in Australia, they won the championship last year and they’re playing in the Champions League,” Toivonen told melbournevictory.com.au.

“If you go on an adventure, you want the possibility of winning, you want to win something.

“With the squad that has been assembled, including Keisuke, Georg and myself, I think we can do some good things this year.”

It’s the third major signing for the Victory this off-season, after securing the signatures of Japanese icon Keisuke Honda as the club’s marquee player as well as German defender Georg Niedermeier.
