Spurs midfielder in extraordinary altercation with own fan

Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier was involved in an extraordinary altercation with a Spurs fan following his side’s shock FA Cup exit at home to Norwich.

Following Tottenham’s penalty shootout loss to the Canaries, Dier was spotted jumping into the stands to confront a fan who allegedly insulted him and his brother.

Dier was filmed shouting, “he’s my brother", as security stepped in to end the fracas.

While Spurs manager Jose Mourinho sympathises with Dier, he admits the his actions were unprofessional.

“The people that tease in these privileged positions, in this area of the tunnel, of course some are Tottenham fans,” Mourinho told reporters post-match.

“But I think a lot of corporation, a lot of invitation, a lot of people with some special status and probably is the place of the stadium where I sometimes have doubts that if they are the real Tottenham fans.

“This person insulted Eric, the family was there, the young brother was not happy with the situation. Then Eric did what we professionals cannot do, but did something that probably we would do.

“When someone insults you and your family is there, and your family gets involved with the person that is insulting you, in this case your younger brother, I think Eric did what we professionals cannot.

“But, I repeat, probably every one of us would do. I am with the player and understand the player.”

There were suggestions on social media that Dier was defending teammate Gedson Fernandes who was reportedly the subject of racial abuse, but Mourinho said he was unaware of that.

“I cannot say, I don’t know,” he added.

“I just know that the reaction of Eric is based on his brother (who) didn’t like what was happening there.”
