A-League set to announce new fixture, Phoenix start journey to Australia

The A-League fixture is set to be shortened and matches played in just Sydney and Melbourne as league bosses push to finish the season as quickly as possible.

The revamped culmination to the season, which is close to being publicly announced, will see the last six rounds be completed in no more than four weeks.

It’s unclear what the make up of the finals will look like but they’re expected to be played in Sydney and Melbourne as well.

Both Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory are currently in a 14-day isolation period after playing in the New Zealand capital last Sunday.

Phoenix CEO David Dome revealed the club is “comfortable” with the situation considering the current unprecedented circumstances.

"It's not my place to release the draw but there are certain plans in place to have the A-League based out of two hubs, being Melbourne and Sydney," Dome said.

"We are relatively comfortable with (the new fixture), given the circumstances.

"Under normal circumstances that would not be an acceptable solution but all the clubs realise that we have to complete the season as soon as possible."

The A-League has been forced to drastically truncate the season after the coronavirus outbreak led to the closure of stadiums to fans.

The Phoenix will be based in Sydney for the next month in order to ensure the season is able to be completed.
